Skateboarding and Super 8
Skateboarders have used Super 8 to chronicle their extreme skills since the birth of the sport proper in the early 70's. With mainstream flicks such as Stacey Peralta's Dogtown and the Z Boys the union of small film and gnarly board based tricks was firmly made. Still recognised as "old school" perfection, there are those who are now using small film to capture the true essence of the sport, even in these days of digital capture.Take NCP Films, the brainchild of Coan Nichols and Rick Charnoski. They travel the length and breadth of the USA capturing grass roots skateboard trogs in full flight, armed only with a Super 8 camera and a pair of wire cutters. Definitive moments in their expanding repetorie of films are Fruits of the Vine and Northwest, both of which capture the true guerilla attitude of the sport, all on glorious Super 8 stock.
If you're not a skater but a keen Super 8'er then check these out, if you skate then pull up a seat for some true old school action. Both titles are available from NCP direct or via Plexifilm. And remember the old adage - skate or go home!
