People power saves Single 8

It seems that for once, common sense and logic have prevailed as Fuji have overturned their previous decision to cease manufacture (and subsequent processing) of film in the the Single 8 format.

Fuji today announced that their Single 8 films in both R25N and RT200N types, which were going to cease production in March 2007 - with and associated end of processing in September 2008, have been given a stay of execution due to the strong views expressed by their customer base. However, the announcement does go on to say that whilst production costs are rising, sales are continuing to decline and there is a need to invest in plant, therefore, an inevitable rise in price is needed.

Other reports are stating that Fuji have said that R25N film (daylight) will be continue to be sold for around five years and the R200N (tungsten) for three. The hike in price brings costs to around 300 and 370 Yen respecively for a single cartridge.

This is excellent news for those using the Single 8 format and has apparently been brought about by it's very vocal and loyal band of users, with protests coming from professional film directors and as well as amateur Japanese users. Such was the strength of feeling that the protests even made some national newspapaers.

A good day for small film!
