Cambridge - dots, bleeps and a ukelele!

As the first follow-up to the highly successful second Super 8mm Festival, the Cambridge Super 8 Group teamed up with local bleepmeister promoters Bad Timing to invite animator Ian Helliwell back for a full-on show of films and electronic sounds.

Brighton-based film-maker Helliwell, who won the 2008 Festival's Development Prize for his experimental film 'Dash Dot', also builds his own highly individual analogue synthesizers, some of which are controlled by semi-random sensors triggered by film strips and ambient light patterns.

The evening at Cambridge's Box Tree Club opened with local electro-grunge duo Man From Uranus and Jellica playing along to a video projection background. Next up was Cockland, the brand name of Jon Lloyd (a member of the CS8 festival posse) who performed heavy metal, electric ukelele to abstract animations and backings of his own devising.

Finally the full analogue experience was unleashed, with Ian's equipment emitting raw retro wails and bleeps - without a keyboard in sight - to a wall of fierce film patterns projected across multiple screens from a gantry packed with genuine 8mm film projectors.

In short, a pleasing break out from traditional cinema towards total performance and possibly the finest full-colour sound-clash ever seen in the area - that is, until the next time...

Dots and Loops with Ian Helliwell

Ian Helliwell has been making truly astonishing, sublime Super 8 short films since early 1990's. His films have a dense psychedelic texture and each is accompanied by a sound track that he creates with electronic musical instruments he builds himself.

Bad Timing and Cambridge Super 8 present an unmissable opportunity to witness a live performance by this unique artist who has previously screened at the Pompidou Centre in Paris. There's a full supporting program drawn from the cream of the electronic and experimental music scene in Cambridge, with Jon Lloyd (aka Cockland) confirmed thus far.

Ian Helliwell is heavily involved with the experimental film and electronic music community in Brighton and he was recently awarded the Development Prize at Cambridge Super 8 Film Festival 2008 for his short film 'Dash Dot' (pictured above).

Helliwell has produced and developed music, Super 8mm films, electronic instruments, film and music programmes and light show projections for concerts and club nights. Self-taught, operating alone and without funding, he has worked with second hand and self built equipment, producing over 40 short films which have been screened as far afield Europe, USA, and Japan.

His long held interest in electronic sound led him to experiment with building and modifying 9 volt circuitry, and Ian has since gone on to construct a series of 'Hellitron' tone generators, each housed in a unique custom box, used to make the soundtracks to Super 8mm films.

In 2007 he designed and built an analogue synth, the 'Hellisizer 2000', and is currently making a 10 part series for radio called 'The Tone Generation', tracing the development of early electronica across the world.

Just lovin' Super 8

The Sunday before Valentine’s Day saw the Cambridge Super 8 Group host another night of Super 8 shorts: this time taking, rather topically, a love-based theme.

Featuring, amongst others, Shane Davey’s “I’ve Been Single Too Long”, Gabi Goubet’s “Nom Dit” and Nick Scott’s “The Other Half”, the pre-Valentine’s show took a wry look at love and relationships, whilst showcasing the best of modern Super 8 filmmaking.

Super M’8 (mate, geddit?) filled the back room of The Locomotive in Cambridge, proving once again that the British university town really loves Super 8.

The show provided a taster for the forthcoming 2nd Cambridge International Super 8 Festival (which will be held on 24th to 26th April), whetting the appetites of local filmgoers.

Expect more preview events in the run up to April's main event!

Derek Jarman exhibit - London

London's Serpentine Gallery, situated in the picturesque Kensington Gardens, has a Derek Jarman retrospective running from February 23rd to the 13th April.

The exhibition, curated by celebrated filmmaker Issac Julien whose film 'Derek' premieres at Sundance this year, is a timely reappraisal of Jarman’s work, and was conceived as an immersive environment, featuring rarely seen films from the Derek Jarman Super 8 archive, an installation of his film Blue, 1993, as well as a selection of his paintings. Julien has also created a series of photographic lightboxes documenting Jarman’s famous cottage and garden situated in the unworldly surroundings of Dungeness.

Jarman was an avid user of Super 8 and a pioneer in using the format for artistic purposes and this exhibition is a rare chance to see his work in the sort of setting for which it was intended.
