Hi Con is back!

Pro 8mm's popular Hi-Con 10 ASA black and white is now back in stock.

This is a black and white reversal stock with very limited (1 stop) latitude and an extremely fine grain. Great for graphic style imagery this stock is reformatted from Kodak's 5263 stock which itself is designed for movie titling.

Vision 3 in Super 8mm

Only days after the Vision 3 launch by Kodak, Pro8mm has its Pro8/19 available for purchase, reformatted from Kodak's 5219 (Vision 3 stock) and loaded into Super 8 cartridges.

The first in the new Vision 3 series of color negative film, Pro8/19 is a 500T negative stock offering the filmmaker greater flexibility in exposure latitude with improved grain in shadow.

The Vision 3 stock adds 2 more stops of latitude in over exposure, improved grain structure in the shadows and as part of the Kodak Vision family of films can be cut seamlessly with Vision 2 stocks.

Kodak notes that the dramatic improvements developed for Vision 3 comes from their proprietary DLT, Dye Layering Technology developed to significantly reduce grain in the shadow areas of the frame, while pulling more detail out of the highlights. In addition, extended highlight latitude gives welcome expansion so the film can perform over a 9 stop range of light.

For available light photography, typical in Super8 applications, this means fantastic highlight detail with better shadow grain.

E64T Hiccup?

According to various reports there seems to be a bit of a problem with supplies of Kodak's Ektachrome 64T Super 8 film stock both here in Europe and in the USA. Whilst the cause isn't know, supplies within the Kodak machine seem to be dwindling but retailers are reporting that they have good supplies in reserve. Our advice - give the neg stocks a whirl!

New Super 8 stock from Kodak?

Normally we don't report rumour, but today we'll make an exception...

According to the editorial in the next issue of smallformat magazine, a remarkable (if it happens) deal between Wittner and Kodak could see the release of the much praised Ektachrome 100D in Super 8 cartridges by Kodak.

Such a collaboration would see the Big K release the stock directly rather than Wittner preping and packaging the film themselves - it seems that some payola is required to lubricate the cogs of this transaction - if we hear more than a sniff of certainty, you dear reader, will be the first to know!

New Pro8mm Stock

Pro8mm have announced their new Pro8/43 ASA 160 Tungsten Negative film stock based on Fuji Eterna Vivid 160 described as "Intense Color, High Saturation, Exceptional Sharpness"

Here's the full SP from the guys in LA...
Introducing the newest film in our range of Super 8 custom load stocks, Pro8/43, a 160 ASA Tungsten Negative. The stock is cut from the new 35mm Fuji Eterna Vivid 160, released by the company just last month, and loaded by Pro8mm into the familiar 50 foot Super 8 cartridges at our Burbank, California facility. Vivid is an evolved version of Eterna with even higher color saturation. It utilizes DIR-Coupler Technology which creates a fresh, translucent color palette by promoting better separation and adhesion of the colors. It also provides higher contrast and sharpness as a result of proprietary Fuji Super Nano-structured grain technology. This controls light sensitive structure and silver-halide grain to nanoscale, minimizing reflection and boosting sharpness.

At the Vivid launch held at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, Fuji Executives announced that the Vivid line would be the best replacement for Fuji Velvia. The Vivid Technology optimizes performance in the studio or in outdoor daylight with an 85 filter. It is processed ECN-2 and can also be run with skip bleach technique.

Because all super 8 cameras were originally designed to shoot 160 ASA Tungsten film, Pro8/43 is 100% compatible with all existing super 8 camera exposure systems embracing 40 years of camera design. Any make or model of super 8 camera will read the exposure correctly.

Pro8mm sells the film in the convenient 50 foot light tight cartridge for $30 including processing. The negative film cannot be projected, and must be scanned to digital for viewing. An all inclusive sample (Tester) can be purchased for $88.88 which can be delivered in MPEG-2 DVD-R format for viewing or Quicktime DV on DVD for use in NLE Systems. Multiple roll value packages for film, processing and Digital Scanning to production formats such as Mini Dv, DV Cam, or Digital Beta are available.

Call one of our knowledgeable project coordinators at 818-848-5522 for additional information, or log on to www.pro8mm.com

Ektachrome vs Velvia

Westsiderfilm dropped us an e-mail about the Super 8 comparison they've done between Velvia 50D (from Spectra Film and Video) and Ektachrome 100D (via Wittner). The Quicktime movie plays out similar shots of the two stocks side by side for truly comparative purposes.

This is really a 'horses for courses' subjective thing, with each offering it's own distinctive potential - have a squint over at Westsiderfilm, but go make a cuppa whilst it downloads! [Thanks Chas!]
