60 not out for Schmalfilm

This month, with its 573rd issue, the German periodical schmalfilm celebrates its 60th birthday. The magazine for enthusiasts of Super 8, Single 8, 16 mm, 8mm and 9.5 mm is published every two months and covers the central topics of cameras, projectors, film material and film production as well as featuring collections of film equipment and prints.

The founder of the German schmalfilm was Hellmuth Lange, a journalist, author and filmmaker from Brunswick in Germany's Lower Saxony. He ran his own publishing company until 1964 when the magazine was sold to the Schiele & Schön in Berlin. Lange continued as editor-in-chief for a further decade.

As an independent technical periodical schmalfilm experienced its peak with the birth of Super 8 in 1965 and the wide use of small film until the 1980's. When amateurs changed to using video, schmalfilm's days seemed numbered and the monthly publication was reduced to bi-monthly. But, at the end of the 1990s a new generation of filmmakers discovered the small film formats as an alternative of digital video and also discovered schmalfilm magazine.

Since 2004 schmalfilm has been published in a new layout and its content revised under editor in chief Jürgen Lossau, who has also written several professional books about film cameras and projectors. Since 2004, the number of the subscribers has increased by 45% to about 5,000 readers. In addition, an international version of the magazine was launched,"smallformat", with half of the contributions in it comes from international authors.

The jubilee issue of schmalfilm contains a story about sixty years of film technology, it features the best articles from the extensive back catalogue. There's also a photo reportage about celebrity filmmakers with international photo archives scoured to see who's been sighted with what cameras.

As well as receiving a message of congratulations from Klaus Wowereit, the Mayor of Berlin, schmalfilm has received extensive support for its jubilee issue from a wide range of small film manufacturers and suppliers; Kodak, Arri, Wittner Cinetec, MWA Nova (Flashscan), Hama, Hähnel plus 20 others.

This special edition of the magazine has 160 pages, triple the size of a normal issue and will be available from mid February. See: www.schmalfilm.de for more details and orders can also be placed via redaktion@schmalfilm.biz

Today's Super 8 Today

The latest (Jan/Feb 2007) edition of Super 8 Today reached onsuper8 towers this week and we think it's a cracker. With behind the scenes at Super 16 Inc's repair facility and Pro8mm lab, as well as an in depth on pushing Ektachrome 100D there's more than enough quality copy for most, but it's the seven pager on Daniel Henriquéz-Ilic's ambitious Super 8 to 35mm Halogenuros Project that really grabbed our attention.

With 44 pages of news, views and insider knowledge, Super 8 Today continues to provide a damn good read and with a cover price pf $6.95 a bargain too. As ever, subscriptions (6 issues over a year) are available from the Super 8 Today website ($29.95 US, $34.95 Canada and $49.95 International Air Mail) with payments by PayPal.
