Another day - another milestone!

It's not long since we had our millionth page load. Late last night we served up our 100,000th Super 8mm film from the podcast - so once again, we're celebrating!

That's the equivalent of around 500 small cinemas worth of people around the world watching some of the best Super 8mm shorts around.

With 59 films and over 5 hours of original content there's something for everyone - so check out our Blip.tv channel or subscribe via iTunes here.

And, if you'd like us to consider including your film, get in touch!

The Ferryman Rushes to Soho

We're a modest bunch here at onsuper8.org but for once we think a little bit of tub thumping might just be in order - if only to prove we actually do make films!

The Ferryman, a seven minute Super 8mm short documentary that we completed late last year is doing quite well on the short film circuit.

After an Honorable Mention at the 2008 USA Super 8mm and Digital Video Festival back in February it's since been officially selected for the Cambridge Super 8mm Festival in the UK, the 6th International Short Film Festival in Balchik, Bulgaria, Gimli Film Festival in Canada and now, the Rushes Soho Short Film Festival in London.

With seven screenings at a variety of venues right across the capital from 23rd July to 30th July, The Ferryman is one of just 18 films in the documentary strand of one of the UK's biggest showcases for short film. We're absolutely thrilled to have been selected and looking forward to getting our slice of Super 8mm out to a brand new audience.

In the film, we spend a day with the forgotten Thelwall ferryman as he takes his few remaining passengers the short distance across the famous Manchester Ship Canal. As he rows his boat from one side to the other of this once busy shipping lane, he tells us how he came to do this most unusual of jobs and the huge change it's made to his life.

The Ferryman has also screened at various film nights around the UK including Cambridge University, Hull Fringe, Brighton Fringe, Manchester Kino (last night) and Liverpool FACT (tomorrow night). Shot predominantly on Fuji Eterna Vivid 160 with a Canon 814 XL-S the film's saturated look gets positive comments at every screening and certainly stands out from the usual digital video crowd.

If you're in London check out the official programme at the Soho Shorts website and don't forget to catch the straight 8 screenings which also form part of the festival.

OchoReSotto web update

We've featured the work of VJ/artists OcheReSotto before (click here for their short cinema advert and here for their brilliant tattoo homage) so we were very interested to learn that they've just updated their website.

If you've missed out, OchoReSotto make extensive use of Super 8mm and 16mm film in their live projections, created to accompany various 'happenings' and gigs. The new website is packed full of visuals of both the moving and still variety and gives an insight as to what 20 projectors in a big room can do!

K40 lab nostalgia

Over at the recently re-vamped Filmshooting|com they've got a short film made by Jean-Pierre Sens (from www.supersens.nl) in the Kodak Kodachrome Lab. in Rennes, shortly before it's closure. The film provides a glimpse into the massive operation that once processed miles of the popular K40 film stock.

One million and counting...

In the wee small hours of last night we passed a significant milestone - our one millionth page load!

onsuper8.org is a far cry from the simple list of resources and suppliers we first set up to help us make our own Super 8mm films. Since those early days we've expanded the site significantly, including news and reviews, .pdf downloads and the short film podcast - and we've still got small gauge plans a plenty!

Without you - our loyal readers, our advertisers and our numerous contributors, onsuper8.org would never have grown to what it is now. So today, whilst we have tea and cake to celebrate, we'll be thanking each and everyone of you!

16mm time lapse beauty

We wouldn't normally venture into the world of 'big' film, but we just had to share this absolutely gorgeous part 16mm time lapse film shot in Tuscany, Italy as a promotional video for the luxury hotel chain Hotel Relais.
The approach was that of uncompromised black and white photography. The clip was shoot in a month with four Canon photo cameras and a Bolex H16 RX-4, a 16mm camera made in 1965, equipped with Kern Switar lens and Orwo film.

Click the image above to watch the film - the download is big, but well worth it!

Tag Galaxy

Tag Galaxy is a visually amazing way of quickly negotiating the millions of photos on Flickr.

It's very simple - type in what you're looking for then results come back in laid out as if in a solar system, click on a planet to drill down further and spin the planet to see the content.

The planet shown above comprises the 277 photos in "Super+8+camera" - brilliant!

Spies like us?

A rare and sophisticated surveillance device, for use by the KGB, using a KMZ Quarz 1x8S-2 Super-8 movie camera as a disguise for an F-21 Electronic "Nailon" miniature clockwork mechanized spy camera.

We're back!

We're all entitled to a break you know!

After an epic trip to to India involving lost luggage with a certain flag carrying airline and their new UK terminal, a damaged Super 8 camera and a worrying case of Delhi belly - we're back... so normal service will resume!

For those going to Cambridge this weekend, we'll see you there, for those that can't - we'll have reports next week including what happened at the Super 8 industry panel.

Cheers all!
